Svetlana Kuznetsova outfoxes Petra Cetkovska in the 2nd round – Western & Southern Open 2011
Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova outfoxed Czech Petra Cetkovska by springing back from a set down to secure her berth in the third round of the Western and Southern Open 2011. The second round was played at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio where Kuznetsova won with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in 2 hours and 3 minutes.
Meeting for the first time, Kuznetsova won the toss and hit 62% of her first serves on target, even though, she struck a net ball and lost points, she managed to win 72% of her first serve and had an overall score of 59% in her total service points.
On the other hand, Cetkovska had won a grand 83% of her first serves and a mediocre second serve won her total of 62% in her total service points, along with, an average return which, enabled her to win only 41% of her total return points in the opening set.
Cetkovska won the set by break her opponent twice, whereas, the Russian was only able to break her once. Hence, restricting her opponent to just four games, she secured the set by smashing 2 aces during the final game and served Kuznetsova the set.
The second set saw Cetkovska nose dive in her serve and return serve, and although, neither of the players smashed an ace, Kuznetsova struck one less double fault than her opponent and had improved in her accuracy due to which she was able to target 70% of her first serve shots.
With the strong forearm that the Russian possessed she was a barrage of unstoppable baseliners that won her an above average 58% of the total service points, while with a faltering defence the Czech attained 42% of her total return points.
The Czech was only able to break her opponent once and was unable to save the two break points on her serve; while Kuznetsova broke her opponent’s serve twice and gained an advantage.
The 26-year-old Czech had an appalling return and a failing serve that attained her 47% win in her total service points of the set and a total of 44% win in her total set points.
Svetlana won the set by accomplishing 56 % of her totals set points which were 6 points more than her opponent’s.
The third set was the final deciding factor and it was a blow for a blow amongst the points of the two, however, Kuznetsova won the set as she was able to save all her break points, hence, not giving a single opportunity to her adversary to break her.
She was also able to break her opponent’s serve twice and gained the competitive edge that she required, eventually she served the set by winning 6 more points and her victory won her the match.
