Swan Yamaha rider Tommy Hill wins 2011 British Superbike Championship title – BSB news
Swan Yamaha rider Tommy Hill won the 2011 MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship after winning the Donington Park race on Sunday, October 9.
Hill said, “I am gobsmacked to have won the title for Swan Yamaha; this has been my goal and I was trying to stay as relaxed as possible in that final race. The season has put a lot of pressure on everyone and that reflects on everyone.”
The British rider took his maiden title by beating one of the strongest title contenders, John Hopkins in the final lap. Hopper was able sustain the lead for about 16 initial laps.
Both riders were merely apart by 0.006 seconds that decided the title for Hills. The British rider was just 6000th of a second ahead from Hopper across the finish line.
Hill said, “We have been regularly finishing in the top three and that has therefore been the benchmark and the whole of the Swan Yamaha team have been working so hard all year to make this possible. It has just been a complete shock for me and I feel like
we should be having another race next weekend now!”
The recent BSB champion added that he was stunned to realise that he has won the 2011 title. Due to an extremely close finish, Hills was doubtful about winning as Hopper had a really good pace in the race.
Hill added that the Swan Yamaha team has worked hard throughout season to achieve its goal and it was well earned.
The team and rider have endured a long and tough season which made the final race and interesting one. Hopper and Hill were only two points apart in the season standings.
He further explained his views that the fans were willing to see an epic race fight for the title and that is what they had done. He claimed it to be a decision taking moment where it could make everything right or wrong.
