Swann Oberson and Thomas Lurz capture 5km Open Water Swim titles - 2011 FINA World Championships
Day four of the 2011 FINA World Championships saw the dominating performance of Swann Oberson and Thomas Lurz in their respective 5km Open Water meets in Shanghai, China, on Thursday, July 21.
The session of the meet conducted the Women’s and Men’s 5km Open Water Swim events. In the Women’s race, Swann Oberson of Switzerland snagged the golden crown with a winning time of 1 hour and 39.7 seconds.
In the meantime, Aurelie Muller of France took home the silver title with an impressive time of 1 hour and 40.1 seconds, while Celia Ashley Twichell of United States captured the bronze medal with a time of 1 hour and 40.2 seconds.
Rachele Bruni of Italy wound up fourth in a time of 1 hour and 42.2 seconds, whereas, Ekaterina Seliverstova of Russia earned fifth place honours with a time of 1 hour and 44.1 seconds. Ophelie Aspord of France finished sixth in a time of 44.9 seconds.
Ana Cunha Marcela of Brazil grabbed seventh spot with a time of 1 hour and 46.7 seconds. Danielle Francesco De was placed eighth in 1 hour and 46.8 seconds, whereas, Cara Baker of New Zealand secured the ninth spot with a time of 1 hour and 47.3 seconds.
Jana Pechanova wound up tenth in a time of 1 hour and 47.4 seconds.
On the other hand, the Men’s 5km Open Water Swim crown was taken over by Germany’s Thomas Lurz with a triumphant time of 56 minutes and 16.6 seconds. Spryos Gianniotis of Greece earned the silver medal with a winning time of 56 minutes and 17.4 seconds,
while Evgeny Drattsev of Russian snared bronze in a time of 56 minutes and 18.5 seconds.
Nicola Bolzonello of Italy finished fourth in a time of 56 minutes and 24.3 seconds, while Andrew Gemmell of United States settled fifth in the respective meet with a time of 56 minutes and 24.8 seconds.
The winners were satisfied with their performance in the respective event and more intense battles can be expected at the championships, which are in full swing in China.
