Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins admitted that he was uncertain about Gylfi Sigurdsson’s future at the Liberty Stadium, following Brendan Rodgers departure from the Welsh club.
The Icelandic International completed his six-month loan spell at Swansea, after arriving at the club in January from Hoffenheim. He was an instant success in the Premier League, making his presence felt by netting 7 goals in 18 league appearances, and remained
a focal point of the Swans midfield during the second half of the previous season.
Given his influential presence at the Liberty Stadium, the 22-year old earlier agreed to sign a permanent contract with Swansea for an estimated 6.8 million pounds transfer fee, which will make him the club’s most expensive signing to date.
However in the event of Rodgers departure, who recently took over the reins of Liverpool, the midfielder had himself admitted that he was in a state of dilemma whether he should pen a deal with Swansea or not, as he is believed to have joined the club at
the Irishman’s request at the very first place.
Following Rodgers exit and Sigurdsson’s reported apprehensions over the proposed new deal, Jenkins indicated that given his astounding run for Swansea over a brief span of time, the Icelandic footballer was bound to catch the attention of bigger clubs, and
revealed that he was totally oblivious of the player’s future plans.
While talking to reporters, he said: “The fact is that he is Hoffenheim's player, not ours, and at this stage I have no idea whether he will be coming back to us on a permanent basis.”
According to some reports Sigurdsson, who enjoys a good rapport with Rodgers, is contemplating a move to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 himself, with the latter having already made public his intentions of pursuing the midfielder in the summer transfer window.
With the deal seemingly certain to materialize just a couple of week s ago, Jenkins expressed his vexation over the factors which had blurred the whole picture and vowed to sort out the player’s matter in the near future.
He added, “For whatever reason they have decided to draw out the process and we will probably find out a lot more about what Gylfi's decisions are over the next few weeks. I have got no idea what the timescale is to sort things out as far as Gylfi is concerned.”
On the subject of his possible transfer to Anfield in the summer, the Swans chairman said that he was unaware of any such developments and as far as he knew, Sigurdsson will be heading back to Hoffenheim for pre-season training.
