Question:

Swapping engines, any tips for bringing an engine out of mothballs and back to life?

Got a '87 CBR 600 F1, original engine burned way way too much oil. Was all set to do a rebuild when a mechanic at the Honda dealer offered me an F1 engine he had used in a go-kart he built, but had removed it cos it wasn't powerful enough for his creation. It's been in a heated basement for 2 years. The owner of the dealership vouches for the guy (who vouches for the engine) and he's never steered me wrong in the 4 years I've known him. Bought the engine for $100, picking it up tomorrow morning (Wed). Any thoughts on what I might want to do to this engine (short of taking it apart, already did that to the old one, want to get riding again fast) to help it get fired up again? Anything I SHOULDN'T do? Relatively new to engines. Thanks!

  1. You should not need to take it apart. Just put in ur cbr. I have a 90 f1 sitting that runs great But i need new plastics for it and they are not cheap.

  2. It wouldn't hurt to squirt a few tablespoons of oil in each plug hole before you try turning it over.

  3. firstoff remove plugs & aircleaner. get a can of wd-40 & spray everything. replace plugs, shoot a little starting fluid in the carb& fire it up.(excessive cranking 100 dollar starter)
