Question:

Swarming gnats in my yard?

I have swarms of biting gnats in my backyard. Is there a spray to get rid of them. It rains a lot here and I'm sure that all the moisture is helping them breed like crazy. I have a rather large yard and they are everywhere!

  1. Remove any standing water, if possible, as this will prevent them laying eggs and multiplying.  If you have a pond you can get products such as Pond Dunk that contain a natural bacteria that prevents the larvae from becoming adults, and thus biting and reproducing.  Available at places like Home Depot.

Otherwise, diluted washing up liquid sprayed onto them will knock them out - it's pretty cheap!

I also recommend getting a solar powered ultra violet bug killer and placing this near to where they swarm.  A standard mains powered version would also work, but it's nice to get electricity for free!   This attracts them via ultra violet light, and kills them with an electric current.    An example is here: http://www.epestsupply.com/pest_control_...

You can also wear some natural scents that will discourage them, though efficiency is mixed.  Citronella is a natural deterrent, and this can be either a plant, or better still a product containing the natural oils.  There are candles that contain this too, useful if you're out at night, or like the decorative look of some sweet candle light.

Otherwise,  check with local nurseries and hardware stores, as there's a range of gnat killing sprays out there, such as this one: http://www.bayeradvanced.com/product/Mos...

Hope these ideas help.  Good luck!  Rob

  2. you may use a spray like 'triazinine' sprayed around the yard in the evening after children and pets have been brought in for the night
