Swaziland Table Tennis Association announces launch of first ever league for the game
The Swaziland Table Tennis Association has announced the official launching of the inaugural league for the game.
The first ever table tennis league in Swaziland will begin from May 14, 2011.
Percy Zulu, the tournament coordinator revealed that the first match of the inaugural tournament will be competed at the OlympAfrica Centre, Swaziland.
A total of eight local teams have registered for the championship. The teams include Luyengo, UNISWA, Club 5, Spirit Rejoice, Umlilo, Simunye, SIMPA/IDM and Kwaluseni. There would be a maximum of five players on each team and a minimum of three. The league
is still waiting to get a major sponsorship deal.
The teams will be contesting in a round-robin format. Each team has to compete in at least four matches in the round. The teams will be participating in the event for the first time hence there are no favourites in the league.
Percy Zulu said, “We are happy with the number of teams that have shown interest in taking part in the games. We are still scouting for sponsors for the league games and we urge more teams that are interested in the sport to come aboard and approach the
association. This is still a new association and we are hopeful with time we will have more teams taking part in our events.”
The organisers of the league have invited the local schools to compete in the inaugural event. The schools that have sent in their entries for the league are as Mhlume, Dvokolwako, Sifundzani, Waterford Kamhlaba, Salesian and St Michael’s High Schools. There
is an open invitation for other schools also, as this will increase the number of players participating in the league.
The young paddlers will be given a chance to show their skills during the league. The organisers are satisfied from the response of the teams from all over the country and are hoping to see the best teams in action at the league.
Swaziland is a small country African country and does not have any major sport. With this inaugural table tennis league, the country might be able to promote the game within the country.
