Swede Caroline Hedwall wins her third title on Ladies European Tour, UNIQA Ladies Open in Austria
Rookie Caroline Hedwall has certainly taken the Ladies European Tour by storm, forging her way to the top slots time and again with her quintessential golf in the season. The rogue Swede has now claimed another skull, the third for the season, when she ravaged
the field to win the UNIQA Ladies Open presented by Raiffiesen, in Austria.
Hedwall has been a major breakthrough for Sweden as far as the LET is concerned, and the young 22-year-old has jolted the ranks of much established LET players right from the start of the year. The young Swede hails from Barsebäck and was barely budged by
the heavy gusts of wind that hammered the Golfclub Föhrenwald on the final day.
Hedwall fired a final round score of eight-under, 64, to finish for an aggregate of 12-under, 204, winning her third title for the year, besides her victory at the Saab PowerPlay Golf earlier in the year.
Hedwall said, “It’s been an unbelievable year. I just try to enjoy myself and have a good time: that’s what I do. I try to have fun and it works. I did play very solid yesterday and I did leave a lot of shots out there. I missed two really short putts, so
it felt like it should have been eight under yesterday. I felt like, if I can keep playing this solid I might have a low round coming. It was just nice that I could pull it off.”
Caroline Afonso of France finished for an outright second, four shots behind Hedwall, while Solheim Cup co-player, Melissa Reid, finished for a joint third, one shot back from Afonso, alongside Linda Wessberg, Giulia Sergas, and Kaisa Ruuttila.
Hedwall was recently selected for the Solheim Cup, primarily qualifying on Captain’s selection. Alison Nicholas, who will be leading the European pack in Ireland in a fortnight, could not help but pick Hedwall for her mind blowing performance in the rookie
year. Hedwall might also be heading for a ‘Grand Double’ where she has a strong chance of being nominated for both ‘Player of the Year’ as well as the ‘Rookie of The Year’ award.
Laura Davies is the only player who was awarded the accolade of ‘Grand Double’ in LET’s history and Hedwall will be the second player to be nominated for the title. Hedwall will also be making her debut at the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters at the end of this
year.
Right after qualifying for the LET card through the Qualifying School in December last year, Hedwall won her first title, the New South Wales Open on the Australian Tour the very next month. She has now soared to number two on the Henderson Money List and
is poised to be one of the greatest Swede players on the tour.
