Swede pair of Sophie Gustafson and Anna Nordqvist leads European Nations Cup – European Ladies Tour
Ladies Tour event of European Nations cup comes to the half-way stage. It was the pair of Sophie Gustafson and Anna Nordqvist from Sweden who emerged at the top of the leader board. They played some exceptional golf during the second round to lead the tournament.
The best score of each player on the hole is counted in this championship.
Both these Swede players came from behind before starting the second day. They complimented each other and compiled a two-day score of 13-under par, 131. They have a one shot lead over their nearest competitors.
Their second day score of nine-under par, 63 clearly shows that they were in complete momentum with their game. This was a brilliant performance by the two lady professionals as they had nine birdies on their scorecard.
This pair from Sweden started their tournament campaign as one of the favourites to win. They certainly have come up to the expectations of their fans. This was also the lowest round for the second day.
Defending champions from Sweden will now look to capitalise their lead. The event, which is being played at the La Sella Golf Resort in Alicante, produced brilliance on the second day.
The host country, Spain, is just one behind the leaders. Spain is placed at the second spot with a score of 12-under par, 132.
Spain’s charge is led by the pair of Maria Hernandez and Azahara Munoz. They also complimented each other and carded a round of six-under par, 66. They had seven birdies and only a single bogey on their score card. This was another brilliant performance
on the second day by the Spanish players.
Wales is placed at the third spot on the score-board. They are just two behind the leaders and have a score of ten-under par, 134. Becky Brewerton and Lydia Hall carded combined eight birdies and two bogeys for the second day. Hall was the one who played
well in the pair.
Germany is four shots behind the leaders. Caroline Masson and Anja Monke had a two-day score of nine-under par, 135.
The overnight leaders, Karen Lunn and Katherine Hull, from Australia faltered on the second day. Their score of one-under par, 71 was not enough for them to maintain their lead. They are now placed tied at the fifth spot with Karine Icher and Virginie Lagoutte-Clement
of France.
Temperature on the second day was perfect for golf.
Nordqvist said, “We shot four under yesterday and nine under today so I guess we prefer this format. It was a good day. We hit a lot of shots close to the pin, I think eight birdies were within two metres so Sophie was really good with the putter and we
kept firing at it, so we had a lot of birdie chances out there. You don’t have two chances on every green, so I think it puts a bit more pressure on every putt.”
The Sweden team was certainly looking on fire as some of their shots landed within a couple of feet from the hole.
Third round of the team championship will continue today as these teams look to improve their positions further on the leader board.
