Sweden and Detroit Red Wings’ forward Henrik Zetterberg decides to go nowhere in lockout
Henrik Zetterberg, a Swedish professional ice hockey player, who plays for Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League (NHL), has decided to stay in Detroit and would be going nowhere during the NHL lockout, unlike most of the other players.
Almost all of the European players came back to their home countries and joined their leagues but Zetterberg has chosen the other option and will be training with the Red Wings’ players at Troy Sports Centre and staying there too. He had done opposite in
the previous lockout of 2004-2005 season but he thinks that situation is different now.
The 31-year-old player had joined the league in 2002-2003 season and after just two years there was a lockout, which made him move back to his native country Sweden and join the team where he started his and career, the team which he left to join the Red
Wings. But he was a 24-year-old bachelor then, but now he is married and 31 years old.
Although he has no kids but it is obviously difficult to leave a country when you have a family. Along with it, he also pointed out that Sweden’s tax something is another reason, why he would not like to go back there. Zetterberg said,
"I'm going to stay for now. It's going to be tough to go to Sweden for the insurance, and with all the taxes we have there. It's going to be tough to go back to Sweden and play. But there are other leagues in Europe that you can go to."
They should have been playing pre-season games right now but they have been cancelled but still he looked in good mood, talking about their training at the home ice, as he added,
"I actually have been pretty good out there. I probably have four plus four”.
The Njurunda, Sweden native has 9 years left on his contract with the Red Wings, who had re-signed him in 2008-2009 season for 12 years and $73 million. He has been one of the highest scoring players in last one decade as he has scored 252 goals, 372 assists
and 624 total points in total of 668 games.
