Sweden beats Denmark in golden set to clinch semi-final spot – Volleyball news
Sweden successfully reserved a berth in semi-final round of 2012 CEV Men’s Continental Cup by defeating Denmark in a golden set on Thursday.
The men’s tournament officially started off on Thursday with a total of sixteen tandems from eight countries. According to the set formula of the competition, each participating country sent two teams in the competition. Brinkborg-Gunnarsson and Jonsson-Jonsson
represented Sweden in the competition. One of the two pairs preformed amazingly well and captured both of its matches but the other due exactly the opposite and failed to clinch success. However, Sweden managed to overcome to opponents in the golden set and
advanced to the semi-finals.
In the first match of the day-1, Jonsson-Jonsson of Sweden came into competition with Denmark’s Soderberg-Hoyer, A. The opening set of the match was a point-to-point battle as both sides displayed an eye-catching action on the net. Swedes gave a good competition
to the opponents but dropped the opening set with a narrow gap of two points (22-24).
Soderberg and Hoyer, A took full advantage of their success in the opening stanza. They opened the second with powerful hits and promptly built an early lead. With better attack, they managed to drag the Swedes under pressure. Jonsson and Jonsson could not
return in the game and eventually accepted the better status of opposite team. Denmark finished the match in 41 minutes, while final set scores were 2-0 (24-22, 21-11).
Unlike Jonsson-Jonsson, the second team of Sweden held off the opponent for 2-0 (21-17, 21-14) victory. They defeated Hoyer, S.-Koren of Denmark and added first win of the day to their tally. Brinkborg and Gunnarsson put Sweden back on track with their winning
performance in the second match. It took them only 35 minutes to edge out the Team Denmark.
The tandem of Brinkborg and Gunnarsson continued with success in their next match when they clashed with Soderberg-Hoyer, A. of Denmark. Comparatively, the second duo of Denmark performed better and did not give an easy time to Swedes. Opening set of the
match was a heated competition, which ended with final score of 23-21 and pair from Sweden emerged successful. Nonetheless, the Denmark tandem responded well in the second frame and clinched success. They claimed better status by posting 21-17 on board. In
the tie breaker third set, Sweden used the five-point advantage and turned the game in its favour. Third set ended at 15-10 and Sweden enjoyed victory.
Denmark once again came at the same level with Sweden with success in fourth match. Hoyer, S.-Koren DEN defeated Jonsson-Jonsson of Sweden in two sets, 2-0 (21-15, 21-19), which created the dead-lock of 2-2.
Game entered the 15-ponit golden set, which was played to decide the winner. Sweden’s Brinkborg-Gunnarsson overcame Denmark’s Soderberg-Hoyer, A. in the golden set and moved into semifinals.
