Sweden’s Nicklas Dackhammar, Fredrik Bergström lead Gold fleet: 470 Junior World Championships
It was a successful day for Sweden’s Nicklas Dackhammar and Fredrik Bergstrom, as they took the only race of the day to lead the 470 Junior World Championships standings with nine points. The Swedish
pair snatched the lead from their British competitors Philip Sparks and David Kohler, who led the standings till the fourth day. Sparks and Kohler had to settle for second place on Day 5, with 20 points.
The fifth day of 470 Junior World Championships could feature only one race because of unideal weather conditions, as the day was annoyingly filled with lighter wind and rain, due to which the race
had to be delayed. However, the Swedish pair sailed tremendously during the only race of the day and took charge of the standings in the end.
While speaking to the local media after their race victory, Bergstrom said, “I think than when Nicklas sailed the Optimist and the Europe dinghies, he was very good in light wind conditions, and when
I sailed Optimist and Europe, I was very good in strong wind conditions. So I think he has pretty good feeling with the rudder and the mainsheet, and that’s why I think we are pretty fast and good sailors in light wind as well as strong.”
Great Britain’s Philip Sparks and David Kohler were leading the scoreboard for the last four days but on Day 5, Tuesday, July 26, they could not perform up to the mark and grabbed 13th
position in the race to move down at number two overall.
