Swedish International Stockholm: Mariana Agathangelou and Heather Olver win Women’s Doubles crown
England’s talented female shuttlers, Mariana Agathangelou and Heather Olver, have made their presence felt to the world as they have won Women’s Doubles crown at the Swedish International Stockholm 2012.
In the final contest, the English pair defeated Eva Lee and Paula Lynn Obanana of USA on Sunday, January 22, at the indoor arena in Stockholm, Sweden.
The World Number 29 Agathangelou and Olver, who were positioned at number two in the Women’s Doubles draw of the championship, proved their supremacy in the final match and ended it in straight games.
On the other hand, Eva and Paula failed to live up to expectations as they could not compete well in the title match and lost it in straight games in just 36 minutes.
In starting rallies of the opening set, both pairs displayed their wonderful skills as they played an attacking game but no one could manage to set up a reasonable gap until the score reached at 6-6. At this stage, Agathangelou and Olver changed their tactics
and took an 11-8 lead until the break.
After the break, Agathangelou and Olver continued their dominating play in the first game and remained on track against the USA shuttlers, who committed many unforced mistakes. The English duo remained positive and finished the set with a margin of 21-15.
In the second set of this final showdown, both sides again played at the same level by matching the speed of each other in starting rallies. The score was 4-4 when the higher ranked English pair occupied the driving seat and dictated the pace of rallies.
Until the end of opening half of second game, Agathangelou and Olver were ahead of their challengers at 11-5.
After the break, Agathangelou and Olver continued their positive run and maintained pressure on their lower ranked opponents. They did not let their rivals to fight back in the game and ended the set with a tremendous 21-12 score on the board.
Agathangelou and Olver bagged their first title of current year by winning the 36-minute final contest against USA players in a fabulous manner as they ended it with a remarkable difference of 21-15 and 21-12.
