Swedish International Stockholm: Scott Evans slays Sylvain Ternon in Men’s Singles round-of-16
The un-seeded Scott Evans of Ireland surprised everyone by reaching into Men’s Singles quarter-final after slaying France’s Sylvain Ternon in round-of-16 showdown of the 2012 Swedish International Stockholm on Friday, January 20, in Sweden.
Evans, who is currently positioned at number 69 in Men’s Singles world rankings, played to his maximum potential and out-classed Ternon in straight games without showing any mercy.
The French shuttler tried to dominate the pace of rallies but failed to make his mark over the experienced Evans and lost the match in just 29 minutes.
It was second victory of the Evans over Ternon in the current month as he also defeated the French in last week’s Estonian International 2012.
The un-seeded Irish came in court with a dominating approach as he played wonderful badminton in the opening rallies of first game and scored five consecutive points to set up an early lead of 5-0.
On the other hand, Ternon remained unable to resist against the aggression of his opponent. He remained far behind Evans at 6-11 until the one-minute interval.
After the break, Evans remained on track and played fast game to move his rival in all areas of the court. His powerful smashes and flawless net shots troubled the movement of Ternon, who failed to match the pace of rallies.
Evans showed no respect for his French challenger throughout the opening set of pre-quarter-final contest and ended it with an authoritative margin of 21-13.
In the following set, Ternon showed a little improvement in his speed and remained equal to his opponent until the score reached at 3-3.
At this stage, Evans started to keep the bird low and accelerated his speed at net to dominate the pace of rallies. Until the break, he was miles ahead of his French rival at 11-4.
After the break, Evans injected more speed in the rallies and continued his domination over his rival. On the other hand, Ternon remained struggling in the whole set and failed to reduce the deficit.
Evans progressed with an incredible speed and ended the second set with a fabulous margin of 21-12. The overall score of this 29-minute straight-set clash was 21-13 and 21-12.
In the quarter-final match, Evans will take on Raul Must of Estonia, who got rid of Sweden’s Henri Hurskainen in the other pre-quarter-final showdown.
