If I just want to learn one of Scandinavian languages(only one, not both, certainly not all), Which should I learn among Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish? And I know Norwegian itself has 2 official forms---"Bokmål" (literally "book language") and "Nynorsk" (literally "new Norwegian"), then which form should I learn, if you recommend Norwegian? If you recommend Swedish or Danish, please explain your detailed ideas.

Thank you very much!

  1. man icelandic is more interesting

  2. You should go with Swedish. Generally, Norwegians and Swedes can understand each other without too much effort, since vocally both languages sound similar (although in written form that's a different matter). And since Sweden is larger than Norway and a country with global clout, Swedish would seem more familiar to more people on an international level.

Danish, I think it's a bit more difficult since consonants are constantly dropped, which gives the language sort of a musical quality to how it sounds, but it can prove harder to learn since words often are not pronounced as they are spelled.

So in short, go with Swedish. You'll be able to generally understand and communicate vocally with Norwegians, so it'll be like a 2-for-1, and it'll prove more useful internationally.

Like what's said below, you could also try Icelandic, which is actually close to Old Norse, which is pretty cool (no pun intended).
