Swedish: What's the difference between "eftersom" and "för att"?

  1. Well of course they both are used to mean "because" but I was taught that "eftersom" is always used at the beginning of a sentence vs. "för att" or "därför att" is used in the middle of a sentence.

    I wouldn't start a sentence with "För att". It sounds a bit weird.

    Like in this sentence:

    "Because the car stopped I was late for work."

    This doesn't sound quite right:

    För att bilen stannade kom jag sent till jobbet.

    while this one does:

    Eftersom bilen stannade kom jag sent till jobbet.

    You can also use "på grund av" which can mean "because" or "due to"

    PÃ¥ grund av att bilen stannade kom jag sent till jobbet.

    In the middle of a sentence they'll both sound right:

    Jag kom sent till jobbet eftersom bilen stannade.

    Jag kom sent till jobbet för att bilen stannade.

    Like Breanne mentioned "därför att" is actually the proper way of saying it, even though when speaking you tend not to say that.

  3. i think  "för att" is mostly used when describing an action but i might be wrong
