Why is my best friend 'min bästa vän' and not 'bäst' ? why is the 'a' there if there's only one?

Maybe because it should be accusative or dative case (and not nominative).

I'm making the first steps too...

You use the word bästa when you are describing a thing/things.

Min bästa vän = My best friend

Mina bästa vänner = My best friends

The word bäst is to describe how something is. (Will come after a verb.)

Min vän är bäst = My friend is the best

Mina vänner är bäst = My friends are the best
