Swedish teenager Filip Forsberg signed by Washington Capitals for three years
Washington Capitals, members of the Southeast Division of Eastern Conference in National Hockey League (NHL) have signed a first round draft top-pick, Filip Forsberg of the Sweden on Friday. Filip Forsberg (not to be confused or related with Former NHL star,
Peter Forsberg), who was born in Ostervala, Sweden is just 17 years-old and will turn 18 on the 13th of August this year. The contract was signed for three years for which Forsberg will get $832,500 for playing in the NHL and $70,000 for playing
in the American Hockey League (AHL).
17 year-old Filip Forsberg is right now playing the Swedish Hockey League and has one year on the contract left with them but his contract with Washington Capitals would be coming into effect when he plays his first game in the America which is not far away,
not sooner than 2013-2014 season.
When Washington Capitals’ Director of Amateur scouting Ross Mahoney was about Filip Forsberg, he said, “When you see Filip, he’s a very young looking young man. A big thing for him is to develop his strength. As he works on his strength, his skating will
get even better. He’s very good at the top of the circle. He has good hands and has some quickness but his overall speed could use some improvement, but that’s the same with most young players his age. So really I think developing off the ice is important
for him.”
Mahoney thinks, Forsberg’s skills have helped him a lot and made him prominent in the development camp but he is too young right now and he needs to build up the strength to get better. It is obvious that getting bigger and stronger is always a main thing
for an Ice Hockey player so Forsberg needs time to get there.
16 year old winger, however is very happy to get this deal done and hopes for the best in his future. When asked about this deal, Forsberg said, “I got a good first feeling from the Capitals. And I thought it was a good decision to get it done right away.”
Forsberg plays for Leksland IF in Swedish Hockey League and has played 95 games, scoring 30 goals, giving 29 assists, earning him total of 59 points in last 3 years.
