Swedish veteran Therese Alshammar wins two gold medals in Stockholm: Day one – 2011 FINA World Cup
Olympic medallist and world champion, Sweden’s Therese Alshammar blew up her rivals and claimed two gold medals at the second round of the seven stop FINA World Cup series, in Stockholm, Sweden, on Saturday, October 15. The session of the competition conducted
the Women’s 100m butterfly and 50m freestyle final heats.
Swedish veteran, Therese Alshammar thrashed out China’s Lu Ying and Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom by hitting the finishing wall with a breathtaking time of 55.99 seconds to win the Women’s 100m butterfly title. Her time fell short of her previous best meet record
of 55.53 seconds. Meanwhile, Ying earned silver medal with a time of 56.44 seconds. That swim was far head of China’s Liu Zige previous best meet record of 56.13 seconds. The bronze title went to Sjostrom with a mark of 56.95 seconds.
Norway’s Ingvild Snildal claimed fourth position with a time of 58.31 seconds, while Sweden's Martina Granstrom went to fifth spot with a mark of 58.43 seconds. In addition, Sweden’s Petra Granlund earned sixth position with a time of 58.90 and China’s Gong
Jie settled for seventh place with a time of 59.02 seconds. Finally, Germany's Theresa Michalak secured eighth position in 59.23 seconds.
After the race, Alshammar did not lose her winning form and won the second gold medal in the Women’s 50m freestyle category by posting a record breaking time of 23.80 seconds. Therese’s splash fell short of Marleen Veldhuis’s previous best meet time of 23.25
seconds. Australia's Angie Bainbridge grabbed silver medal with a time of 24.57 seconds, whereas, Colombia’s Claire Vilshed claimed bronze medal in 24.84 seconds.
Canada's Chantal van Landeghem got fourth position by posting a time of 25.11 seconds, while Sweden's Michelle Coleman earned fifth place honours in 25.13 seconds. Additionally, Australia's Sally Foster settled for sixth place in 25.16 seconds and Magdalena
Kuras of Columbia earned seventh position in a time of 25.27 seconds. Last, but not the least, China's Zheng Yifei finished eighth with a mark of 25.36 seconds.
The mouth shattering swims of Therese Alshammar mesmerised the hearts of the arena and the top three players were awarded accolades and cash prizes after the session’s completion.
