My answer - Do you mind sweeping the floor please Tom. (The teacher marked it wrong, she crossed out the "ing" and left it to read - Do you mind sweep the floor please Tom.

  1. Perhaps,

Tom, please sweep the floor. Do you mind?

but that'll be 2 sentences, your teacher is wrong! talk to her, and tell your parents

  2. You don't have to run to your parents.  Obviously, she's seeing it differently from you.  Simply ask her what you did wrong.  She's there to explain.    It's correct to write:

Do you mind sweeping the floor, Tom?

The please is unnecessary because you're replaced it with "Do you mind".  You wouldn't need both.

You could make it two sentences:

Sweep the floor please, Tom.  Do you mind?

Those are your only viable options.  Your teacher might have (can it BE?) made a mistake.  We do that once a decade!

  3. I agree with previous answerer.  Your teacher is wrong and you should show that to your parents.  Your sentence is correct.  Can you think of any sentence using it that wouldn't be followed by a "ing" verb form?

Only think I can think of is that the teacher wanted something more than just starting a sentence with the "do you mind".  Did you see what answers she did mark correct from your friends?  Ask your friends and they may be able to shed more light on the assignment.

PS "Do you mind sweeping the floor please Tom"

Could it be your punctuation?  It should read, "Do you mind sweeping the floor, please, Tom?"  or even "Do you mind sweeping the floor please, Tom?"

  4. Your teacher is wrong!

Perhaps she means: Do you mind!  Sweep the floor, Tom!

But that has a different meaning.
