Swift Helen has the fast track to a win at Monmore
The experts have been known to say that you can always win with a winner, and Swift Helen helped to put that theory into practice today in a 480m race at Monmore Green Stadium in Wolverhampton.
Swift Helen is a fierce competitor, and certainly lived up to her name with a 29.93 finish to take the victory in this A10 race. She was billed as the 2-1 favourite to win, and she delivered a terrific finish, which put smiles on the faces of many a greyhound racing fan at the track.
Zooming in just a shoulder’s length behind Swift Helen was the aptly named Elderberry Zoom (5-1). His close finish tied the winner’s finishing time of 29.93. Face The Rocket (4-1) ended up with an equally close finish, as he too was a shoulder’s length out of a position. He took third place with a time of 29.94.
Davrics Warrior (4-1) battled hard against the other racers, but could only manage a fourth-place finish. He completed the race in 30.06, which put him 1½ lengths out of the top three. Finishing two lengths behind him was 12-1 long shot Johnny Hooker, who hooked fifth place in 30.22. The bottom spot was claimed by Astral Sid (3-1), who was 2 lengths behind Johnny Hooker with a 30.38 finish.
Ballymac Lucy (5-1), one of several members of the storied Ballymac lineage of greyhound racing, did her relatives proud with her first-place finish in the next 480m A10 race. She finished the race in great form, despite missing a break early on. However, she rebounded to lead fourth, and finished the race with a time of 29.49.
Maketheheadlines (5-1) failed to make the headlines as the race’s champion, but he did finish a respectable second behind Ballymac Lucy in 29.53. Only a ½ length separated him from the number one position. Taking third place was Roscoes Hairdo (9-2), who finished the race a head behind the second-place finisher in 29.54.
Fourth place went to Meenala Jamie (3-1), who crowded fourth, and ran to a 29.66 finish. She was 1½ lengths behind Roscoes Hairdo. Elderberry Ruso was the 6-4 favourite coming into this race, but he failed to live up to the predictions, as his 29.78 finish was 1½ lengths behind the number four dog to land him in fifth place.
Sportium Alcorco (5-1) lay claim on the sixth and final spot in 29.92. He was 1¾ lengths behind the favourite, and despite having every chance, could not pick up a win today.
Swift Helen may have been the winner of the first race of the afternoon at Monmore Green Stadium, but will she be able to replicate the feat? Find out when the greyhound races resume on Thursday 16 September. The first race of the evening is slated to begin at 19:25.
