  1. take it slow in the beginning and then go crazy kamikazi fast in the end..

  2. think about pacing and that one girls 10 - 6 - 4 strategy works well, but also the 500 is somewhat mental, you cant automatically think that the race is over if you are behind at like the 400

  3. The 500 is won and lost on flip turns in most cases for things like championship meets and higher-ranking competitions. As long as you've got a nice long stroke and rhythm, you keep your kicking nice and constant and your flip turns are quick and effective you should do good. Since it sounds like you haven't swam this event before don't worry about your time, just give it effort like you'd give any other swim and you can see if you've improved should you swim it again.

  4. it really depends on how you train.  I train for the 200, so when i swim the 500 i keep my training in mind.

I take it out a little slower than i would for a 100, try to hold that for the next 200, then negative split the last 200.  this is a good way to keep from dying, and too keep your head in the game so you don't freak out and cause yourself to die.

  5. first of all, try not to be nervous although it is really hard not to. you can listen to your mp3 or ipod before your race to get a song stuck in your head. and sing it in your head, thats what i do. when you do your flip-turns make sure you kick as hard as you can off the walls and don't breath on your first stroke. it also really helps if you swim in the middle of the lane, it takes off quite a bit of swimming you have to do. if you have problems with your goggles maybe wear them under your cap (you know wear your strap under your cap) when doing warm ups make sure you practice these things an i think you will be fine. swimming the 500 is not as long as it seems when you swim it. it is just always the numbers that scare me.. oh yeah and race the clock!! have fun, and i wish you the best of luck with your 500!

P.S. try to pace yourself at the beginning and go for a good sprinting finish at the end.. kick hard and swim fast!

  6. for racing I do 10-6-4.  10 laps medium, 6laps fast and 4 laps all out.  thats what our team does and it works! we have some great distance swimmers.  another thing you can do is train longer than that.  so when you do the 500 you'll have done way more so it won't seem like a lot.

  7. arm bands (y)

  8. ask your coach, or anyone who watches you at practice,

what i do is have signals with mine to tell me when to pick

up the speed or slow it down, just pace yourself and sprint

    the last 100
