Question:

Swim team help needed?

have been swimming for years and have been on my high school swim team for 2 years. This upcoming season I would love for my team to be much better than previous years. Our swim team usually does not win any meets during the course of a season. If we do win it is against the team in the conference that has the same ability as our team. Our team does not have a dive team so that gives the other team an automatic 5 or 7 points. I want to know if anyone has any practice ideas about a practice schedule of activities that will help the team improve?

P.S. we do not have access to any pool in the offseason and we only have an 1 1/2 hours for pool time.

  1. It's great you have this enthusiasm for improving your team.  Spread that enthusiasm and that would be a step in the right direction.  Since you don't have access to a pool except during the season, doing some basic dryland with cords and core work to help everyone once they got in the water.  A stronger core helps the rotation of a stroke and cord work can strengthen your arms, shoulders and back and avoid injury.  Being that HS swimming is mostly sprinting, focus on that aspect.  Lots of sprints, hypoxic training, turn work, starts and then endurance training is a good order to work in practice.  Try recruiting a gymnast or cheerleader for your dive team.  They don't have to be great to score some points and it makes a huge difference.

  2. I have been on the swim team for many years, and I've been on MANY swimteams.  The most effective technique is this-

1.start with a long warmup.  Do a 300-600.  Do half the warmup involing technique, and the other half easy swim.

    ex-A 400 freestyle.  Every odd 50 drill.

2.do a set that is normally about a half an hour.  The difficultly level is medium.  This is the drill set of the day.  Make it involve a lot of technique and make them swim a lot of 50's or 25's  so you can make sure thier swimming it right and so you can correct them.  Also change the drills they do to keep them interested.

    ex-25 50's. 1-Drill 2-swim 3-Drill 4-swim

3.This is the speed set, or main set.  It is also the longest set.  Make it involve many 100-400.  Do about 4 100-400's fast, then do a few easy 25's or 50's and repeat.

4.Finally, I very simple cool down.  The warm up should always be at least double the cool down.  So do something like two easy 100's

    I really hope this helps!!!

  3. If ur school has a weight room ask ur coach to schedual time for lifting. Also my school won state last year and will probably win again next year. We practice for 2 hours in the morning before school and 2 1/2 hours after school. Have ur coach make up a neutrition gide so u know how to eat healthier. We do lots of dry land and practice everyday. It works for us so I hope it works for u.

  4. maybe if you have a community pool or something you could practice there while the season is off?
