Swimmer profile: Hannah Miley - Britain’s 400m IM specialist
Born on August 8, 1989, Hannah Miley is Britain’s multi-stroke specialist who qualified as a finalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2009 World Championships. Miley specialises in the Individual Medley (IM) and freestyle events.
Miley was born in Swindon and coached under Patrick Miley, when she entered the domestic world of swimming in 2005 at Britain’s National Championships, where she earned a bronze medal in the 400m Individual Medley with a time of 4:51.21 minutes. After a few months at the European Junior Championships, she won a silver medal in the same event with a timing of 4:47.47 minutes and at the European Short Course Championships, she finished sixth in a time of 4:37.12 minutes.
Then in 2006, Miley first competed at the British Championships, where she participated in seven events at the championship, but was only able to earn the gold medal of her main event, the 400m Individual Medley only. She won the gold medal in a time of 4:46.55 minutes, finished fifth in 200m IM in 2:18.98 minutes, 10th in the 200m butterfly and 100m freestyle in 2:20.56 and 1:06.17 minutes, respectively. The Briton ended seventh in the 800m freestyle in 8:58.58 minutes and ninth in 400m freestyle in 4:22.21 minutes.
Her gold in the championship made her way through to the 2006 Commonwealth Games, where she finished fourth in the 400m Individual Medley in a time of 4:47.95 minutes, an effort 0.48 seconds above her silver medal at the 2005 Junior Championships. She also came seventh in the 200m IM in 2:17.83 minutes. Then at the 2006 European Championships, Miley finished the 400m Individual Medley in the seventh place in a time of 4:47.51 minutes.
Miley did not participate in any event in the year 2007, but in 2008, she participated at the National Swimming Championships and won gold medals in the 200m IM with an improved timing of 2:11.46 minutes. In the 400m IM, she ended her swim in a time of 4:37.41 minutes. She then added another event to her participation list at the ASA Championships, where she participated in the 200m and 400m IM, along with the 200m freestyle. She won gold medals in the 200m and 400m Individual Medley with a timing of 2:14.77 and 4:42.84 minutes, respectively, whereas, she finished fifth in the 200m freestyle in 2:01.25 minutes.
Miley’s gold medals in the championship qualified her to participate at the European Championships, where she raced in the 200m and 400m IM and finished fourth in both races in 2:08.31 and 4:27.33 minutes, respectively. After a few months, Miley represented Britain at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where she finished 11th in the 200m IM in a time of 2:12.35 minutes and sixth in the 400m IM in a time of 4:39.44 minutes. She was also a part of Britain’s 4*200m freestyle relay team that finished ninth in 7:56.16 minutes.
She won a silver medal in the 400m IM in 4:27.27 minutes and a bronze medal in the 200m IM in 2:08.79 minutes, at the 2008 World Championships. Then, at the 2009 Swimming Nationals, Miley won three gold medals in the 200m breast-stroke, 200m and 400m IM in 2:26.31, 2:09.59 and 4:31.33 minutes, respectively. She also won a silver medal in the 200m butterfly in 2:08.24 minutes and finished fourth in the 200m freestyle in 1:59.42 minutes.
The same year at European Championships, she for the first time won a gold medal in 400m IM in 4:25.66 minutes and a bronze medal in the 200m IM in 2:06.96 minutes.
Then, at the 2010 National Swimming Championships, Miley smashed two gold medals in her main events and a silver medal in the 200m breast-stroke. At the European Championships, she won a gold medal in 400m IM with a time of 4:33.09 minutes and also two bronze medals. The same year, she again won a gold medal in the 400m IM with a time of 4:38.83 minutes at the Commonwealth Games.
Now, in 2011, at the British Gas Swimming Championships, Miley won a gold medal in 200m IM in 2:12.01 minutes, which led to her qualification for the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, where she clinched the silver medal of the 400m IM to please her fans.
