Swimmers hair...?

My husband has recently started swimming and it has made his hair look horrible. He used Swimmers shampoo but it still looks gross, its gotten much lighter and feels sticky when you touch it. Is there any home remedy for this or even something that I can buy to make it better?

  1. I swim every week, at least 3 times, and my hair is fine.

Make sure you have shampoo AND conditioner, the brand doesn't tend to matter that much, but as above, Aussie is a good one.

Normally you can shampoo and wash the chlorine out, and then leave the conditioner in your hair and almost brush through it. That leaves my hair fine, and sometimes I have long hair, so it works.

A little trick I learnt from a friend though is that if you condition your hair first, then shampoo, then condition, your hair becomes surprisingly softer.

    Give it a try!!

  2. Apple cider vinegar gets rid of residue build-up on hair, leaving it soft and shiny. Mix 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar with 1 quart water and use as a final rinse after shampooing.

  3. tell him to use a good conditioner and if the chlorine is making his hair horrible mabey he could use a swim cap

  4. deb,

Try some other brands. The chlorine-removing chemicals are mostly the same from brand to brand, but one manufacturer or another may use more chemical than others. You might also want to try some salon shampoos to see if they are more helpful. Pools use a variety of chemicals, and often more than necessary for public pools, which can make swimmers hair awful.

  5. Does he shower all the chlorine out? I'm a swimmer and my hair gets a little frizzy but other than that there is no difference. If he doesnt take a shower afterwards, i recommend it! Although this isnt what most guys do have him use a conditioner called Aussie - it completly works in one use. There a lot of different kinds but get the cleanse and mend kind. I use it always right after the pool. He also may not be washing his hair right. Here are some tips to get the deep chlorine out.

When using shampoo - shampoo is mostly made for the scalp, not for ends. Have your husband massage the shampoo deeply into his scalp and mostly focus on that. Repeat if desired.

Conditioner (Aussie) - mostly get the ends of the hair. lightly coat scalp. No need to massage. Conditioner takes a little bit to really work through your hair so i recommend waiting 1- 2 minutes before he washes out his hair. Makes a huse difference. ( dont do this with shampoo ) Hope that helps! tell me how it works out :)
