Swimmers impress arena at the Mare Nostrum, Barcelona: Day one - Recap
Several intriguing swimming performances were displayed by athletes on day one of the Mare Nostrum event held in Barcelona, Spain, on June 4, 2011.
Belinda Hocking won the Women’s 100m back-stroke title with a sterling time of 59.81 seconds, while Laszlo Cseh claimed the Men’s 200m Individual Medley title with a winning time of 1 minute and 58.94 seconds.
In the Men’s 200m back-stroke, Ryosuke Irie hit the wall in 1 minute and 54.62 seconds for gold, while Alicia Coutts snatched the Women’s 100m butterfly title with an astonishing time of 57.25 seconds.
Ryusuke Sakata picked up the top seed in the Men’s 200m butterfly with a time of 1 minute and 56.40 seconds, while Mireia Belmonte clinched the Women's 400m Individual Medley title with a winning time of 4 minutes and 39.69 seconds. In the Women’s 50m breast-stroke,
Jenny Johansson snared first spot with a victorious time of 31.25 seconds, while Junya Koga captured the Men’s 50m back-stroke crown with a time of 25.19 seconds.
Gergo Kis hit the wall in 3 minutes and 48.85 seconds to claim gold in the Men’s 400m freestyle. Sergiy Frolov settled second in 3 minutes and 50.89 seconds, while Sebastien Rouault rounded out the top three in 3 minutes and 51.41 seconds. Fran Halsall snared
the Women's 50m freestyle meet with a winning time of 25.01 seconds, while Svetlana Fedulova wound up second in 25.52 seconds and Sjostrom earned third place honours in 25.53 seconds.
Satomi Suzuki topped the Women's 200m breast-stroke meet with a sterling time of 2 minutes and 25.64 seconds. Marina Garcia Urzainqui earned silver with a time of 2 minutes and 26.32 seconds, whereas, Sally Foster hit the wall in 2 minutes and 26.35 seconds
to clinch third spot in the respective meet.
Meanwhile, the Women’s 200m freestyle crown was captured by Angie Bainbridge with a winning time of 1 minute and 57.83 seconds. Joanne Jackson grabbed silver with a time of 1 minute and 58.55 seconds and Hanae Ito snagged bronze in 1 minute and 58.77 seconds.
Christian Sprenger hit the wall in 1 minute and 00.73 seconds to claim gold in the Men's 100m breast-stroke meet, while Evgeny Lagunov snared the Men's 100m freestyle title with a fastest time of 49.28 seconds.
Finally, the Women’s 800m freestyle title was clinched by Erika Villaecija Garcia with a sterling time of 8 minutes and 31.09 seconds. Belmonte captured silver with a time of 8 minutes and 31.84 seconds, while Dasca Romeu settled for bronze in 8 minutes
and 31.92 seconds.
