Swimmers impress at the European SC Swimming Championships 2012 - Part 3
After the notable efforts of Katinka Hosszu and Florent Manaudou in Women’s 200m butterfly and Men’s 50m freestyle on the initial day of the 2012 European Short Course Swimming Championships, the audience was thrilled to see the dazzling performances of
their opponents on day two of the event.
The opening event of the second day of the championship was Women’s 800m freestyle, where the Danish swimmer, Lotte Friis, went on a rampage in the event and occupied the title.
Friis remained in a comfortable lead over her strongest competitors and transpired on the finishing end for the crown by touching the wall with the timing of 8 minutes and 10.24 seconds.
Friis’ gold claiming effort remained nearly nine seconds slower from the European and World record of 8 minutes and 01.06 seconds, made by Camille Muffat of France in November 2012. Similarly, she was nearly six seconds slower from the championship record
of 8 minutes and 04.53 seconds, held by Alessia Filippi of Italy in 2008.
Her notable effort remained prominently ahead of Great Britain’s Hannah Miley, who transpired on the finishing wall for silver medal by clocking a time of 8 minutes and 15.66 seconds.
Third spot of the race was obtained by Miley’s teammate, Aimee Willmott, who proved her mettle for bronze medal by touching the wall with the timing of 8 minutes and 18.90 seconds.
Following that, the audience witnessed scintillating form of Jeremy Stravius of France, who faced tough contest from his preceding swimmer and surfaced on the finishing end for the title. With his unrelenting efforts in the shortest backstroke discipline,
Stravius remained prominently ahead of his following swimmer and tapped the wall with the timing of 23.37 seconds.
His exhausting efforts in the 50m discipline remained almost half a second slower from the European mark of Stanislav Donets of Russia, who posted an effort of 22.74 seconds during 2010. He also remained 0.76 seconds away from the world mark of 22.61 seconds,
owned by Peter Marshall of USA in 2009.
The silver medal of the race was secured by Guy Barnea of Israel, who stayed only a touch behind and posted a time of 23.47 seconds. Third fastest spot of the event was obtained by Benjamin Stasiulis of France, who stepped on the victory stand with an effort
of 23.56 seconds.
Subsequently, Melanie Henique exceeded expectations of her supporters as she dominated the playoff of Women’s 50m butterfly. Henique spoiled the party of her opponents as she tapped the wall for the title by producing a time of 25.67 seconds.
Her gruelling effort remained more than a second slower from the world record of 24.38 seconds, made by Therese Alshammar of Sweden in 2009.
She also stayed 0.75 seconds slower from the championship record of Jeanette Ottesen of Denmark, who clocked 24.92 seconds in 2011.
Henique stayed only an inch faster from her closest challenger, Silvia Di Pietro of Italy, who concluded her race in second best place by reporting an effort of 25.78 seconds.
Di Pietro remained marginally ahead of Kimberly Buys of Belgium, who snared third fastest spot of the race by producing an effort of 25.91 seconds for bronze medal.
The bronze medallist was followed by Ilaria Bianchi of Italy, who settled on the wall as fourth fastest swimmer with an effort of 25.92 seconds.
