Swimming Australia imposes ban on Denis Cotterell to train foreigner swimmers – Swimming News
The officials of Swimming Australia have imposed a ban on one of their most prominent swimming coaches, Denis Cotterell for training international swimmers.
The news was disclosed by Hao Yun of China on opening day of the Chinese National Long Course Swimming Championships and was confirmed by the swimming superstar and Cotterell’s student, Sun Yang.
The 1500m freestyle Olympic champion, Yang confirmed China Daily that the Australian officials have banned his coach, Cotterell from training the international swimmers.
Cotterell had been coaching Yang for a long time and because of his relentless efforts, Yang was able to beat the world record pace of 1500m freestyle at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai.
Yang made his way to the podium in the 1500m freestyle at the 2009 World Championships in Rome, where he occupied third position in the event.
Later on, Yang became the centre of attention for everyone after he improved the long lasting record of Australian veteran Grant Hackett at the world titles.
His achievements in Shanghai were not limited to the 1500m event only, as he also seized the crown of 800m freestyle along with a silver medal in the 400m event and a bronze finish in the 4*200m freestyle relay.
Yang told China Daily that, “Yes, this is what happened. But he still wants to work with me and so do I. We will find out if we can still make it work. I think the training methods there have fit me very well. I don't want to change anything or find a new
place. I wish I could be able to maintain the cooperation with him and he thinks so.”
Nevertheless, the Chinese swim team leader, Xu Qi contradicted with the news, saying that this has become more of a collaboration between China and Australia. Qi also reported that Cotterell confirmed that he does not know about any ban imposed on him by
Swimming Australia
In addition, it is also said that the Australian officials were forced to take this decision because of the poor performance of the Australian stars at the 2012 London Olympics Games.
