Swimming: Ian Thorpe approaches a new coach, identity not revealed
The talented swimmer Ian Thorpe is left Sydney for Abu Dhabi on Friday, 24 February, where he will be partnering with a new coach whose identity has been kept a secret from the media by the Australian swimmer. It has also been stated that this particular
trainer of the international swimmer will be coaching him through the training sessions for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
The 28-year-old swimmer had announced his comeback to the pool some three weeks ago. He said he will resume his participation in the swimming championships and competitions on the 2 November, when his drug-testing register for nine months will be completed.
Talking about his training plans for the upcoming Olympics, the five time Olympic champion said so far Abu Dhabi will be his main training base, however he added that he will also be heading towards Europe towards end of March for further training sessions.
Thorpe was at the Sydney airport while he was talking to the correspondents, where he said that he is extremely pleased with the way his training sessions are coming along ever since he announced his return to the sport. He went on to say that he thinks
he is making a good enough progress so far and he just wanted to leave for Abu Dhabi to start training with his new coach. Thorpe said that now this gives him a feeling of a new beginning.
The Australian greatest Olympic champion, Ian Thorpe did not reveal the identity of the coach that he will be training with; nonetheless, he called him his long-term option. The head coach of the Australian swimming team, Leigh Nugent, will also make his
way to the Middle East to join the great athlete by next week.
When the Australian swimmer was inquired about his new coach, all he said was that he is excited and enthusiastic to train with him. He also clarified that it is not a secret and the public will get to know of him once he starts training. Thorpe was reported
as saying, “At the moment, the people that I’m bringing in, I want to be able to train with them and pretty much be myself and to be left alone during that training process.”
Thorpe has to his credit list, a total of 11 world titles and has set 13 long course world records before he announced his retirement in November of 2006 after swimming for the Australian team for 10 years.
