Swimming above a small dam???

On the river near our house, there is a small dam, and a sign: "Absolutely no swimming, if you fall into the water, you will die"

I asked a guy who works at the dam and he said that it is basically a "turning-current" much like a washing machine and if someone get swept into it, you will circulate with the water in this "washing-machine" like current at the dam.

Question:

Should someone fall in and get caught in this washing-machine like turning current, how can you swim out of it?

Second, how long will you be in this current before the current will set you free?

  1. u couldnt because the spinning pieces mover to slow to allow a caught swimmer to escape and reach the surface in 4min. most people drown by then
