Question:

Swimming as a break between running: good idea?

I am getting ready for boot camp and need to improve my running time and endurance. I was told to run everyother day. But I was wondering if I could swim on the days off without doing any damage? I can currently run about 1.5 miles and then run out of breath. I am aiming to increase my breathing and I think this may be right. I need to make it up to 3 miles without stopping in 1 month.

  1. Swimming is an excellent way to cross train. It gives your muscles a break from the pounding of running, but still gives you a hard workout. It can help with your breathing as well as train other muscles you don't normally use when you run. Overall, it is an excellent conditioning tool and you should be fine.

  2. Swimming is a GREAT alternative...cross-training between running, swimming, and biking will increase strength, endurance, and speed.  I strongly suggest swimming...just don't overexert yourself!! Have Fun and Good Luck!!! :D

  3. That's a great idea. Swimming works the right muscles for running. Running in the water is also a good way to train for running. Swimming can help get your endurance up which is great for running.
