Question:

Swimming in Cairns?

I know that during certain months during summer you can't swim in un-netted beaches in Cairns due to stingers, but is it safe to swim in the sea in the winter months?

And just how safe are the beaches with nets?

  1. I recommend to swim at the Cairns lagoon - it's in the middle of the city and it's save. Had been there. You can swim there all year round.

    Have fun.

  2. The risk involved is very low in the winter months.I have lived in Australia for over 16 years and have not heard of anyone getting stung by jellyfish in winter. But its better to be safe than sorry so wear a full body wet suit or stinger suit.Salt water crocodiles are more dangerous further up north. My best advice is to check with the locals before you decide to take a dip.

  3. The winter months are the least dangerous as you have noted but there is still a risk involved. Same applies for netted beaches. Best to avoid swimming or at the very least invest in a stinger suit.

  4. The lagoon is great - right in the city, but it's closed for a month at the mo while they re-tile it.  Tourists are not happy - but guess it has to be done at some stage.

More tourists generally travel to Cairns during the winter months, not only for the nice weather, but also because of the stinger-free waters.  From November until May each year, stinger jellyfish make the waters off the coast of Cairns.

If you get into the ocean during the stinger season, it is advised that you wear a protective stinger suit. Also, some beaches provide stinger nets for you to swim in.

The Northern beaches all have nets - eg, Trinity Beach, Kewarra Beach, Clifton Beach, Palm Cove.  The lifeguards go in the nets first thing and 'scoop' for jelly fish (just in case) if it's clear, the beach is open.

Once in a blue moon a croc will get caught up in the nets (from overnight) - - - but remember it always happens to someone else, not you!   - see here for more info http://www.cairns.com.au/article/2008/03...
