Question:

Swimming pool - low ph + high alkalinity + no chlorine?

Inground swimming pool. Test shows low ph but high alkalinity. I've put in several rounds of Ph Higher and it's a little better but still a little low . Alkalinity has been consistently high. I'm confused because I read for high alkalinity you should add acid, but that will lower the Ph even more. Also I keep adding shock and the level is ok for a day but then next day no chlorine registers. Cyanuric acid level is good, a little high if anything but barely. Is chlorine loss due to low ph?? Help!!

  1. there is a product by united chemical called " PH up"...it raises the PH a lot but raises alkilinity very little....use the PH UP to raise the PH,then add acid to lower both together it may take a few tries...

  2. Don't confuse the terms "basic" and "alkaline". Basic is the opposite of acidic - pH above 7 is "basic" and pH below 7 is "acidic".

Alkalinity is the measure of the amount of Bicarbonate + Carbonate + Hydroxide ions in your water.  At a pH of 7 or slightly below, you won't have any Hydroxide or Carbonate, but you can have the Bicarbonate ion.  If you have a lot of bicarbonate from hard water, you will need to add lots of soda ash to the water in order to increase the pH, as the Bicarbonate ion acts as a "buffer" to resist changes in pH.

My guess is your total dissolved solids are in the 1000-2000 ppm range.  Your best bet may be to regularly backwash the pool, and replace some of the water with new water.

  3. u want to never agian ask those question abt your pool water?? email me at info@itsallhollywood.com and il tell u how to swim in chemical free water all day with no maintanence   ... chemicals r a thing of the past now, swim in pure unadulterated water, thats my suggestion

  4. Shock will not bring up you chlorine for long you need to get granulated chlorine and add the amount that it says for start up, do this first until you have consistent chlorine then adjust the ph.
