  1. An old style gravity flow sand filter could be constructed; but that technology is very out-dated and proven to be much less effective than modern types.

I would bet that in Greece you have Hotels & Resorts which have modern swimming pools;  they must have equipment suppliers that import proper modern pool supplies into the country.

It sounds like you have less of a problem with type of filter than with capacity.  There are modern filters available that use cartridges (with a paper-like filter medium) or that use sand in a high-pressure containment vessel.  Modern versions of these types normally have sensors installed that activate an automatic back-wash when the filters start getting clogged up.  That means they are essentially self-cleaning and require very little maintenance.

That would be a better alternative to building your own gravity flow sand filter, which is not particularly effective and which requires a large container very much like a 2nd swimming pool, only filled with sand!

Try doing a little more research on your local pool industry.  I'd bet that you can find the companies that supply the local Hotel/Resort trade and get a modern filtration system from one of them.

  2. Try making a filter with a tough gauze and put the paper filter inside this. Only thing I can think of as our pool has a sand filter and is underground
