Question:

Swimming pool sand filter?

My friend recently got me a new sand filter from his dad for a low price. Since i hooked it up about a week ago it has been working great. Today i got outside to check on it and water is coming out the waste. I had the handle set on top to filter and water was still coming out the waste. No matter what i set the handle on top to it still comes straight out of the waste part of it. I have no idea why this suddenly happened but i want to get it fixed as soon as possible and for as cheap as possible so if anyone could help me out. I would GREATLY GREATLY appreciate it.

  1. Turn off the pump whenever you move the handle.  My thoughts are that you probably moved t he handle when you wanted to backwash since you got the filter, and you damaged the O-rings in the multivalve unit.  Turn the pool off, Take the screws out, and inspect the O-rings, if you have one that is pinched, broken, or otherwise defective in ANY way, replace it.. and that should fix your problem.  You should also lubricate the oring lightly before installing it, the little bit of lubrication will help hold it in place so that it does not become unseated and get damaged while putting the valve back together.

  2. it sounds like the handle is broke.a pool supply store should be able to get a replacement if you know the brand and model number. My lever snapped on my doughboy filter two years ago and had to replace it .It's an easy fix.If the valve is shot you can replace the whole upper part of the filter that tightens on for about a hundred bucks.Hope this helps.

  3. 6 maybe 8 small bolts hold the top of the valve to the bottom. remove these bolts, lift the top and see if the rubber gasket/o ring is still seated where it is supposed to be. inexpensive and available from the local pool supply guy. been there, done that.

  4. Try backwashing until your water runs clear, then return to filter.

  5. Replace the rubber O rings.
