I am dying to go for a swim in my above ground pool (28 feet around). I live in Tennessee. What water temperature is a safe temp for swimming?

  1. Safe? As soon as the crust of ice is broken.

Seriously, people in cold climates swim when the water is below 50 degrees (Fahrenheit), which is not unusual for the Great Lakes or the Atlantic on a hot August day. It makes you gasp when you go in (do it fast!), then you're fine.

  2. For recreational swimming it mostly depends on you.  On the East Coast lots of people hit the beach when the water temp is 68 or so.  For competitive training 78 is what the university pools are and this is cold.  Your local YMCA keeps the pool 84-86 degrees which is a little warm.  Just make sure the air temp is warmer than the pool to avoid getting sick.

  3. Step in the water.  If it is too cold for you, don't go.  If it feels ok.  Then Enjoy!  I live in New England, and we go in weeks (or some of my friends days) after the ice leaves the lake!

  4. Summer, or  75 degrees

  5. 78 degrees F

It's that warm here and swimmable weather.

    But our pool isn't open.
