  1. There's a few things that need to be cleared up here:

#1: It could be your instructor. I swim for my high school and I try to teach more responsive diagnosed people to swim through Special Olympics and the more responsive the person I'm working with is the more they'll get out of me and also if they're ready for some advanced technique that'll help as well. But what I'm trying to get at is some instructors work better with different kind of people so maybe your instructor just isn't understanding your problems in the water. Keep communication open with them and explain things that are going on and have them constantly communicate with you because you might be right there on the verge of learning how to properly swim but you're just not aware of it without their help.

#2: I've seen many kids try to learn how to swim with videos and the success rate is so low that I'm suprised they're still making the videos. Videos don't show you things like proper muscle tensions and things like that that are essential for proper swimming. If you don't know how to control your limbs in the water you basically have no chance of swimming.

#3: It takes years to develop advanced technique like my own. I took basic lessons for years (I couldn't get the diving down right) and even for years I was still getting lessons on things like my arm movements and kicking pattern. It takes a long time to get to the competitive level so don't expect anything like that yet.

  2. just get in the water by yourself. and start moving. try to move like other people do like the other person said. i taught myself how to teach. i think a teacher teaching will actually hold you back. because they have the stretch out the class.. but if you can, just try to teach yourself and dont just give up. or try to swim with friends. play with them for a while so u get more use to the water maybe.. but what exactly is your problem, can you not float or something?

just be calm in the water and think about everything your doing

  3. Practice practice practice!  You WILL get better.  If you can't afford classes, just observe others and try to emulate them.

Get in and SWIM! My kids were 'ok' swimmers after a summer's lessons, but after they spent a few weeks of days swimming in the neighbor's pool, just playing around, they were like little fish!

    GOOD LUCK!

  4. Ok Harry swimming always starts with the legs.  Get on a kickboard point toes and kick from the hip small fast kicks.  Practice, practice, practice  When you have adequate white water (splash) and are moving rapidly down the pool in like 20 sec. then you are ready to lose the board and work on some of the pull technique.  Everybody progresses at there own rate so keep it up

  5. Everybody is giving you good advise, but I think your biggest problem is confidence.  To gain the confidence you need, do all your practicing in the shallow end where you can touch bottom if you get freaked out.  Learn to float on your stomach while holding your breath until it becomes easy.  Then float on your stomach while rotating your head to breath.  Then, while doing this, start kicking your legs and moving your arms.  Don't forget to "cup" your hands while they push through the water.  The most important thing is breathing, and you do this by rotating your head as you move forward.  You grab a breath while your mouth is out of the water and you exhale it when your face is "in" the water.  Watch other swimmers to learn how.  Do NOT venture into the deep end until you've got this down pat and you're confident in your abilities.  You'll be great.  Trust me.

After you learn how to swim, you can learn how to dive under water by holding your breath for as long as you can, and going for it.  It's lots of fun.  You'll see.

  6. Watch people swimming...copy them. Practice makes perfect! DON'T be afraid to get your face underwater...

  7. If you want to learn to swim fast go to a swimming school. It took me about a month of training to be able to go into the deep end without a life jacket. If you want to train yourself to swim buy one of those air things you loop around your arm. This helps a lot and you will get the hang of it in no time.

  8. join the local swim team. it is the absolute best place to learn. if your at a swim school chances are you are with kids alot younger than you ands its probably discouraging you. dont give up and keep working. and check out you tube there are vids up there too.

  9. y dont u just join a local swim club, or hire someone who knos how 2 swim 2 teach u?
