  1. No swimming dose not help you fight swimming helps you swim. Get out and run 5 miles 5 days a week jump rope for 15 minutes hit the heavy bag for 20 minutes hit the speed bag for 15 minutes spar for 15 minutes 3 days a week and in three months you will be in shape I guarantee it

  2. swimming is great for conditioning and punching in water is great for resistance training. try punching under water with weights. most important is running. if you can't run you can't fight

  3. I would say it would improve your condition in general and punching under water may have simular effects as punching with weights in your hands but to be honest there are methods used in every gym that are more effective for conditioning and improving handspeed. If you only want to use the pool though it wont do you any harm.

  4. One of  my fighters works out at 24 hour fitness 2 days per week exclusively in the pool. His warm up consists of 95 laps which equals 1 hour of swimming time non-stop. He then does 30 minutes of various strength training exercises in the pool. This is on Wednesday & on Friday he does strictly strength for 2 hours that consist again of many different pool exercises. This is absolutely the best thing that we have ever added to his program.

Think of 1 hour swimming non stop, how many punches would he be throwing? when he is used to working those shoulders like that non stop how tired do you think they get in the ring?. He never gets tired, he runs on his non swimming days for 8 miles each run & does not get tired.  I am 100% behind this I know my sh@# & this is a great program to get into. E-mail me if you are in the So-Cal area & I will tell you were to go see this kid swim at.

As far as punching under water goes the only benefit I see from that is that you can really let your hands go & the resistance keeps you in place. What I mean by that is if you really load up on lets say your hooks then you would be moving all over the place but in the water you are stable. I believe it helps with your speed because of the resistance you get from it.

If you have the luxury of getting into a pool then do it, we travel 30 miles each way to the closest 24 hours to us just to get this extra work. My other pros run everyday & also due sprints & are in great shape but not as good as my guy that swims, everyone sees the difference & trust me its the swimming.

  5. swimming is good for conditioning, but few if any fighters that I know swim as part of their training program.  As the answer above me says- there are more efficient ways to achieve the same result.

As far as punching underwater- that was a ruse that Ali had- then known as Cassius Clay- to get an interview with Time (I think) Magazine.  The ruse worked, and not only was he interviewed they put his photo on the cover.
