  1. One key to swimming fast is having a good kick, and strong core muscles to efficiently capture the power of your kick.  So for starters what you need to do is a lot of isolated kicking, with or without a kickboard.  Also it's helpful to do core strengthening exercises, like situps and crunches, and fly kick on your back in the water.

If you're a real beginner though the best way to speed up would be to practice and then practice more.

  2. There are three key aspects of swimming:

    1. Kick- kick helps maintain you momentum and speed while you swim.

    2. Rotation and Body dolphin- these are the core of your stroke, and help keep you in balance

    3. Pull- your pull is the main driving force that keeps you moving forward

the most efficient way to swim (non-competitive/recreational) would be to kick six times for every stroke you make. The pull should be at a right angle from the catch, because it is the most efficient.
