I know the basic ones, like breastroke and backstroke, but are there any others? I've gotten bored of the normal ones and want to spice up my swim routine.

  1. First, consider if u have reached a sufficient standard in swimming the breast-stroke, considered a 'survival stroke', great for emergencies at sea and for extremely long distance swims. Are you capable of swimming, say 20 50m laps without undue tiredness or strain?

If so, you should then proceed to the front crawl, the fastest stroke. A must-learn stroke if you love to swim in the rivers or sea---a useful and life-saving skill, to escape from any predators! These two are really the essential strokes that would help anyone for recreation, physical fitness and survival.

Of course if you are adventurous, and have lots of stamina and strength, you would like to try the butterfly which is the most complex and exhausting stroke.  I wouldnt really recommend anyone doing the back-stroke often, esp in a public pool, as it is so easy to create a head concussion accident  with another swimmer doing a front crawl or back-stroke.

If you could manage 15-20 laps front crawl without a break, you are more than an average swimmer. Then your next step to get more thrill out of swimming  is to go for some competition, to discover your potential. Oh btw, learn underwater swimming too, and learn to recover items as this skill will come in real handy, one day.

    Best of luck!

  2. butterfly, backstroke, breastroke and freestyle. and Individual Medley is swimming all 4 strokes in that order in a set distance

  3. I have swam 200 fly in meets since i was 12 and let me add a liitle to a-dub...first there should be no difference in the kicks....both should be good strong kicks...kick when hands enter and when your hands are at your waist....as far as the answer to your question...the main four are Back, breast, fly and free......good luck...if you want a routine email me and i will give you an Medley workout (all four strokes)...good luck!!

  4. front crawl, elementary backstroke, butterfly

  5. I'm gonna assume you know freestyle, or crawl stroke, since its the most elementary and basic of strokes. The only other stroke is butterfly.

In butterfly, the kick involves both legs moving at the same time. It is most often called a dolphin kick, and involves keeping your legs touching side-by-side and waving them up and down quick and hard, i.e. the way a dolphin moves its back fin. The key is the hips, which is where the kick should start. The hips should move up and down, and the rest of the legs down to your toes should follow.

The arms in butterfly also move at the same time. Let's say you just pushed off the wall streamlined. You push both hands outwards while keeping them underwater. Then you push down towards your groin and inwards, keeping your palms facing behind you. Continue bringing your hands back, and now spread them out again so they push out of the water at your sides with your hands behind you. Pull them out, bring them around, and throw them back into the water in front of you. This is a single stroke of fly, so repeat after this.

When you mesh the kick and pull together, just remember rhythm. You need a steady rhythm, and here's the most common one. Most butterfliers have two kicks for every one pull. Do a big, powerful kick when your arms re-enter the water in front of you, and a smaller kick when your arms leave the water behind you. Also, breathing: Breathe every other stroke. I.e, you take your first stroke and keep your face in the water, not moving your head. On your next stroke, when your arms and hands push down towards your groin, it should give you the power and momentum to pull your face or head from the water. If its not quite enough, just lift your face quickly. Breathe every other stroke.

Butterfly is considered widely to be the most difficult stroke, and there's lots to remember and learn. Don't get overwhelmed, and start learning by just doing some butterfly drills. Dolphin kick on the surface and underwater. Practice moving your arms in the correct motion while on land. Once you get the technique down, you can get in the water, learn some actual fly drills, and start to do the actual stroke. You can even experiment a little if you desire. Butterfly is fun, so enjoy it overall!
