Question:

Swimming with a t-shirt on?

I'm hoping to get a good answer to this without giving too much background. My children are at a daycare for the summer aka: summer camp (6,8,10 yr old boys) the provider has recently implimented a policy that the children all wear t-shirts when they are swimming. On field trips the children typically wear the same shirts to and from the location but never while swimming at a waterpark or pool. I have my arguments and I'm sure the provider has their reasons. What do you think I could do or they should do?

  1. Honestly, if it disturbs you that much, talk to the provider to find out the reasons. Maybe it's because so many parents are buying their young daughters awfully revealing swimsuits these days and to not single anyone out they insist everyone cover up. Maybe it's more along health concerns as added protection for not getting sunburned. What ever the reason, in the end you are going to have to decide whether or not you feel comfortable enough with this daycare to stick it out. Is the way they manage and care for your children worth giving up due to a rule as simple as this?

  2. I think it's a sensible idea - kids can get badly sunburnt while swimming. If it's a communal pool, it also makes it much easier for the daycare staff to identify the children they are responsible for.

I'm not sure what advice you are after here - what do you want to do? Force them to abandon the policy? Why?

  3. I dont understand why this would be that huge of a deal, especially if the day care provider is being responsible for all the wet shirts after swimming.

Its probably an inconvience, but I wouldnt make anything of it.

It is probably coming from a modesty policy.  Perhaps they are a faith based day care, or perhaps they were having issues with girls not wear appropriate swim suits/tops.

And of course, a t shirt will help protect from sun burn.

  4. The provider is doing what they this is overall best for the children's health and well-being.  If you have a concern, by all means voice it to the provider.  However, be prepared to make a decision about changing providers if this means that much to you and they refuse to change their policy.
