i used to swim alot till i was 13 and now i am over weight/obese [187 pounds , 160 cms] ...i have started swimming again and tested my critical speed today which was around 1.5m/sec.....

problem is i am still very shy about swimming when there are too many men around...its like me being obese is 100 times more magnified...i become so conscious and i give up sometimes....dont know how to concentrate....

please give me tips on what kind of swimsuit to wear if one is obese plus some tips on how to get over the paranoia

  1. wear suits two sizes larger

  2. I think no matter what suit you are wearing, you will be very conscience about your size because you admitted you are focusing on that.  With that said, congratulations on your desire to get back into shape!  That should continue to be your focus and your goal.  Remember, you are doing this for yourself and your family - not to impress the other guys at the pool.  One of the great things about swimming for those who are so conscious about their body shape like you are, is because it is a solo sport, no one else really pays attention.  When I do happen to notice someone who looks like you describe, I am encouraged that they are making efforts!

Start off with realistic goals and work from there.  In addition to starting to exercise again, don't forget to modify your diet; minimal sweets, high protein/low fat foods will help - take in less than you use each day.

For the swimsuit, wear what you are comfortable in.  I see guys at the gym who are in a similar situation as yourself wear brief style suits/speedos while others wear trunks.  When I first started swimming I was 25 pounds overweight and I chose to wear a brief style suit as a reminder that I wanted to get my body in shape to the point that I could get away with wearing one, i.e., having a lean body.

Go and enjoy your swim and may your efforts to get back in shape be rewarded!

  3. At 187, I doubt U look as bad  as U think u do. Remember also, once in the water  only your head  and shoulders and arms are showing.
