My husband and I are looking to take dance lessons (like swing or salsa) somewhere in The Greater Cincinnati area [just for fun mainly] - and I was just wondering if anyone had any personal experiences with taking lessons in any of the dance studios in Cincinnati? I have found a lot of places I just wanted to know if anyone had any particularly bad OR good experiences in any of the studios. . . . Thanks!!!!

  1. Well first off, which do you prefer more . . . swing music or salsa music?  What about pop music or country?  There's more than one type of swing dancing, and they are very different from salsa.  I wouldn't recommend trying to learn two brand new dances at the same time, so you should probably pick one, then come back to the other later if you are still interested.

    Here's the breakdown of music/dance:

    (dance style - music)

Swing/Lindy Hop - Big Band and Swing Music

    Salsa/ChaCha/Tango - Latin Music

West Coast Swing - Pop, Country, Blues

Regardless of where you take lessons, you should go somewhere where the music moves you . .. makes you want to dance.  In the long run, this will allow you to have a more enjoyable experience dancing.

Secondly, I recommend you go to a social dance venue that offers an introductory lesson before social dancing.  This is an excellent way to get into the dance by learning a little, then watching and trying social dancing for the rest of the evening.

In terms of looking for an instructor, don't be afraid to shop around.  Often times one teacher will click better for you and be easier to learn from than another.  Try a few "drop in" beginning classes with different teachers until you find one that works for you!

    I hope that helps!
