Question:

Swing has become uncomfortable, hands feel like they are coming off the club at the top of back swing?

Let me start by saying I usually shoot in the low 90's high 80's so I'm by no means a good golfer. But recently, my swing has gone down the tubes. As I start my back swing everything feels uncomfortable and when I get to the top, I have this feeling that I need to adjust my grip or I'm not going to hit the golf ball. This feeling only occurs when I'm standing over the ball. My practice swings still feel rather fluid. So, is this a mental thing I'm going through or does the feeling I'm describing sound like anything anyone has ever heard before? I mean, I know that when I'm swinging I must be making some kind of flaw, but what could it be based on how my grip feels at the top? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  1. You have a cause and effect happening.

There are mental thoughts that are impacting your physical swing & game.

    *uncomfortable

*feeling the need to adjust your grip

    *hit the ball

Lets put it this way...if you throw a golf ball, baseball or frisbee your not going to hold the object with a death grip just as you release it, right?  same goal here...you already know the task at hand...Trust in your ability...confidence is gained at the driving range, executing that confidence is done on the course.

The first thing that I can recall that I encountered and still do so now...is the thought of trying to "hit the ball"...it's human nature to feel that way...however, someone once told me this...

Try not to "hit the ball"...You are utilizing your practice swing that felt so good and comfortable at the driving range, and putting it in place here on the course at this very moment...the ball just happens to be in the way.  This was told to me by an very old lady in her 50s that kicked my butt during a round.

Golf is an ego based activity...we are playing with others that cannot help in judging our performance, and more so as our inability to perform.   We reach excuses for our own defence of a poor shot...too much wind, the other guy farted during my back swing, the birds singing too much, the earth spun too quickly ya know what I'm saying?

Your grip...are they clean?  did you wipe them off with alcohol before the round to get all the oil from you hands off?  or did you take shake hands with others that applied sunscreen prior to the first hole?  many factors...

Grips is a personal choice...would you rather swing with grips that are colored black and feel slick, or the ones that are pink & pretty but, is made to stay on your hands without effort?  see...it is an ego thing, thats what we all need to get past...

If your holding your club as if your holding a hummingbird, you are correct...if you killed the hummingbird by impact, well you know the rest.

  2. Can't see what you are doing....so.....get a lesson or 2 from a good teaching pro....if nothing else it will probably restore your confidence in your swing.

  3. Tighten the back three finger of your lead hand( not strangle but tighten), shorten the back swing a bit and you will not loosen the grip at the top. The fingers come off the club due to overswinging because the momentum forces the hand to open.
