Question:

Swinging fast to create distance, but slicing

I am trying to gain more distance off the tee by swinging faster, but it always seem to result in a slice. Any suggestions to create clubhead speed, but maintain a straight drive? I'm not sure if my body is getting ahead of the ball or not.

  1. Swinging fast is not the same as developing club head speed.  Better contact and improved swing mechanics will generate more club head speed thus more distance.  Stay within yourself.  remember 260 down the center beats 300 in the trees every time  To improve your swing mechanics see a teaching pro...you can't get that from a book or a video....it requires professional feedback.

  2. just because u swing fast doesn't mean that u will get distance, but try closing the face of your club a little bit.

  3. A slice results from a number of things but most commonly when people are trying to kill the ball it is because when they get to the top of their back-swing, they rush and come too steep on the ball, and develop an out-to-in swing path which does not make solid contact and will usually result in a slice (You want an in-to-out path ideally). Generating club head speed results form good swing mechanics, and if your body is getting too far ahead of your hands, what always helps me is remembering to make sure I get my weight on my back foot during my back swing, then I hold it until I am sure my club has reached the top of my back swing. So basically, slow everything down and just relax, as said earlier 260 in the fairway always beats 300 in the trees.

  4. A slice is usually the result of trying to overpower the ball. You need to develop the proper swing before working on distance.

You could try a different grip in order to get the club face square to closing at the point of impact. To do this rotate your grip a little bit clockwise if your right handed but not to far or you will be pulling or hooking the ball.

Also keep the practice to the driving range. Use the drive that will keep you in the middle while playing a round.

  5. Maybe because you're trying to swing faster you're coming over the top and slicing it or you might just be leaving you're club face open =]

p.s just because you're trying to swing faster you're distance wont increase dramatically.

    turn you're hips faster =]

  6. try to release your hands more.... hit the inside of the ball and then release your hands,, the ball will go straight or draw..

  7. Make sure your outside arm is stiff. And if you are still slicing purchase a BRUSH TEE. This is a tee that has  brushes to hold your ball. This helped my distance also.

  8. On your back swing go really slow

  9. i used to do the same thing.  what i realized i was doing when swinging fast was my body would turn faster than my arms and leave the club face wide open at impact.  make sure hips and arms are in sync.  also try having a larger swing arc and shoulder rotation on the back swing.  it helps createtorque and speed quite easily.  also try to have a slow smooth backswing and the fastest part of the swing should be after impact.  it should steadily increase in the downswing and be fastest right after impact.  also commit to the shot fully because when swing fast if you tense up you block the shot

  10. Role your wrists and forearms thru the hitting zone. You slice every time the club head is not square to the target line. On a slice, the club face is open or the imaginary perpendicular line emanating from the center of the club face is pointing to the right ( for right handed golfers)

You've got to get the clubface perpendicular to the target line at impact. On the range, try to hook some shots and then gradually get back to square and then practice being square.
