Swiss Express is now a ‘Tennis Professor’
Roger Federer, known as the Swiss Maestro, reached new heights of greatness on Sunday night as he bagged his 70th career title and his 100th final appearance. Swiss express defeated his Frenchman rival, Jo-Wilfried
Tsonga in a close three set match to grab his sixth ATP World Tour Finals Cup. The defending champion broke down in tears as he rewrote history with his name in golden words.
Setting new heights in the history of tennis the veteran also became the only player to win a Masters Series after the age of 30. Reaching the season end, Federer had not won any major titles; however, he did win at Doha earlier
in the season. The 30-year-old’s performance at U.S Open made analysts predict that the Swiss should now retire. However, the Swiss express had a plan of his own.
“I was here to stay. Many people forward my retirement, but I'm there, fighting another generation of younger players and stronger than me” said Federer.
However, the scenario changed as the season was up to its last few Masters series. Entering Basel, the former world No.1 gave his best and at his age, it was a great deal to counter agility with perfection. Beating down Kei Nishikori
in the final Federer’s came in his momentum once again.
The win at Basel was yet not enough for the Swiss Express and took his walk into the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris. Federer, doing away with Tomas Berdych in the semi-final and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the Final, Federer lifted his
third title of the season; however, he did drop a place and came to world No.4.
However, the final showdown started off on 20th November 2011, the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London. Federer, who was the defending champion at the O2 Arena, came forth with the world’s top players and this time
the veteran had no way out rather than to play as he used to when he was at the top.
This was the first time that the Swiss finished majority of his matches in three sets. The event started off with Federer taking on Frenchman, Tsonga for the first match of the event and won in three sets. However, his next match
amazed and blew away the event. Knocking down Rafael Nadal, World No.2, 6-3, bagel, was a shocker for the entire tennis federation.
Federer finally had his revenge on the Spaniard and at a perfect time, after that, the 30-year-old ousted Mardy Fish, David Ferrer and, what a coincidence, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga again in the final.
What the two rivals started, end as well. With final touch of his racquet near the net, broke the Swiss down in tears as he became the first man in tennis history to capture 70 titles, and make 100th final appearance
leading him to be named and the only person named as ‘The Tennis Professor’. While several are determined to pull out, Federer continues to add records and breaking statistics. The 'Swiss Express' does not stop...
