Swiss Open GP Gold: Tommy Sugiarto defeats Valeriy Atrashchenkov in first round encounter
Indonesia’s in-form player Tommy Sugiarto had to dig into his arsenal to overwhelm Ukraine’s Valeriy Atrashchenkov in Men’s Singles first round encounter at Swiss Open GP Gold 2012 at Basel, Switzerland, on Tuesday, March 13.
Sugiarto, who has got an elevated ranking by reaching at number 16 in Men’s Singles category, had to employ his experience to chuck out his lower ranked Ukrainian opponent and won the contest in three sets.
Valeriy lost the match in 46 minutes but not before taking a set from his higher ranked Indonesian challenger.
Sugiarto started his campaign in a commanding way as he played fast badminton and did not take much time in setting up an incredible lead.
Until the one-minute break in the first game, the Indonesian was moving far ahead by reaching at 11-5.
After the break, he continued playing composed badminton and did not spare any loophole for his rival at any stage. He remained on track and played his impressive shots in all areas of the court and took the game with a stunning margin of 21-11.
In the second set, Valeriy played elevated badminton as he played with precision and managed to remain equal to his higher ranked opponent.
The Ukrainian was positive this time and also matched the speed of Sugiarto. Until the one-minute interval, Valeriy established a reasonable lead of 11-8.
After the interval, Sugiarto played well and managed to level the score by reaching 13-13. At this stage, he lost his focus and could not score even a single point against his aggressive opponent and lost the game with a difference of 13-21.
In the decider, Sugiarto became aggressive as he executed powerful smashes and remained in wonderful control.
The Indonesian did not let his lower ranked opponent to level the score at any stage and set up an 11-2 lead until the interval.
After the break, Valeriy played better game and reduced the gap but could not level the score as his rival was miles ahead. Sugiarto ended the deciding game with a five-point difference of 21-16.
The Indonesian won the match in 46 minutes with a 21-11, 13-21 and 21-16 score on the board.
