Swiss Open: Judith Meulendijks stuns Porntip Buranaprasertsuk in Women’s Singles first round
Netherland’s Judith Meulendijks delivered remarkable performance as she created an upset by beating Thailand’s Porntip Buranaprasertsuk in Women’s Singles first round of Swiss Open GP Gold on Wednesday, March 14, in Switzerland.
The World Number 46 Judith showed her brilliance in the arena and stunned the higher ranked Porntip who has been placed at number 14 in Women’s Singles world placements.
Judith took 48 minutes in the court to beat her Thai opponent after putting up fabulous show of flawless badminton for three games.
On the other hand, Porntip remained struggling to find a good rhythm in the whole contest but failed to overpower her challenger and crashed out from the tournament.
In the opening set, both ladies played in an aggressive manner as they did not miss any chance to execute powerful smashes and earn points. Until the break in the opening set, Judith was slightly ahead at 11-10.
After the interval, the Dutch shuttler was in superb control of rallies as she played with wonderful precision and reached at 20-18.
However, Judith could not finish it as her higher ranked Thai opponent played well at this stage and scored four points in a row to bag the game. Judith lost the first set with a tight margin of 20-22.
In the second game, both ladies kept the crowd engaged by displaying their hard-to-learn skills and remained close on the score board until the one-minute interval.
After the break, Porntip was leading the game by 14-12 margin when Judith delivered a stunning performance as she grabbed nine consecutive points and ended the set with a tremendous score of 21-14.
In the deciding game, Judith did not let her opponent to dominate the pace of rallies anymore as she was quicker in all areas of the court and remained ahead at 11-7 until the interval.
After the break, the Dutch lady was in full swing as she played impressive badminton without committing any mistake. She was focused in the game and easily bagged it with a striking 21-11 score on the board.
Judith emerged as the winner of this fabulous rubber-set fight with a margin of 20-22, 21-14 and 21-11.
