Question:

Switching from Canidae...what now?

Since Canidae switched formulas, my dog isn't doing good on it anymore. So I'm looking to switch. I have a 5 year old Golden Pyr who scratches a lot and a 1 year old Shepherd/Collie who is pretty active. I was thinking about California Natural since one scratches and the other burps and farts a lot. Has anyone tried this food? I don't know if I need to add something else to the food, or would they be getting enough protein? Any other suggestions?

  1. California Natural is a great food for dogs with allergies. There is enough protein and you won't have to add any supplements. Get the Lamb & Rice formula to help with allergies even more.

  2. Try looking into the Viand line of foods. I have been feeding my dogs Viand with raw meat and yogurt for many years and have never had an issue with any kind of itching, burping or anything else.

It's a holistic food and is delivered right to your door.

  3. California Naturals is a good choice if your dogs will eat it.  Mine didn't like it at all.  I have them on Natures Variety now and they are doing wonderfully!

Here is a coupon code for a free bag of the Natures Variety when you buy one of the same size.

  4. how long did you have your dogs on canidae? they detox (like people) for up to a month long sometimes when you switch from a bad diet to a better one with less fillers.

california natural has only 1 source of protein which is good for dogs who can't tolerate multiprotein kibbles but if a dog could tolerate it then more protein sources are healthier.. it is good quality though. innova would be a step up though.

did you ever consider a raw food diet?

  5. My Beagle use to be Royal Canin. He hated the taste of it but most of all it made his skin itchy and he lost a ton of hair. I was told to try Orijen and I did. What a huge difference. My beagle isn't itchy nor is he loosing a ton of hair as well his coat looks awesome. Orijen is 70% protein (good protein and no fillers), 30% veggies and fruit and ZERO GRAINS. Alot of dogs are allergic to grains and grain fillers. It will work for both your dogs.

  6. ~ I switched from Canidae over a year ago.  I tried Innova and EVO which my dogs liked and tried my foster Golden on California Natural.  I have found the best food to me and my pack is Orijen 6 Fresh Fish.  It is grain free and because it is fish the couple of my dogs that had allergies to wheat and chicken are now allergy free.  No more ear problems, itching and thin hair.  They love it!

I highly recommend Orijen regular or fish.  Also Natures Variety Instinct is another one of my grain free favorites.

  7. Hi there,

I had the same issues on Canidae.  I had my first dog on it since puppy and for the first while she was doing great on it. (All life stages)  As about a year went by i started noticing some hair loss, behind her ears and on the back of her legs, i took her to the Vet but they said it looked normal and she did not have any issues.  I started giving her "missing link" in her meals and it made a little bit of a difference.  I got a new puppy a few months after that, and everything was fine until i noticed she also was having the hair loss issue.  I decided then to switch my babies to Orijen.  http://www.championpetfoods.com/orijen/o...  It took a little while for the hair to come back but honestly almost immediately i saw a change in the amount of stool being produced and everything else.  So i strongly recommend you switch to Orijen you can check the website to locate a "dealer" in your area.  I am currently feeding the fish formula but my dogs do not like it as much as the regular adult.  Good luck!
