I'm interested in switching out an oil burning stove and replacing with a wood stove for primary heat of a house with 3 levels (basement, main, and attic) yet only 800sq ft. It's a small house and the wood stove I was looking to get was rated for 1400 sq ft. I intended to reuse the piping but was concerned about the way heat was directed around the house.

Normally with a wood stove, heat resonates outward one pipe goes out to expel the smoke. But if I'm directing the air in the house then the smoke is staying in. Interesting enough, the oil stove has a pipe connected from the outside air. Don't know if this is for a draft or to expel smoke. If for smoke then the wood stove might work fine. If for cold air draft then I still have the smoke problem.

  1. i would contact a good local contractor to come take a look and make sure that the existing system is compatible with the new wood stove.  the piping and the chimney will need a thorough inspection to make sure you don't end up with fire or smoke damage...
